Invisalign

Invisalign

Orthodontic treatment is life changing. A straight smile means increased oral function, diminished likelihood of developing common oral disease, and an improved appearance. Invisalign is an effective alternative to conventional metal braces. This treatment option is typically reserved for adults – although some teenagers might benefit from Invisalign as well.

Invisalign improves tooth positioning by closing gaps, moving rotated and overlapped teeth, and correcting issues with crowding. Additionally, Invisalign treatment can improve occlusal problems such as under bites and open bites. Our practice is proud to offer advanced treatment options like Invisalign to improve the quality of life of our patients.

How it Works

Invisalign, while utilizing different materials than conventional braces, generates tooth movement by applying consistent pressure to teeth. This pressure is created by patients wearing form fitting oral appliances called aligners. An aligner is made from clear plastic and fits snuggly over teeth like a retainer.

During treatment, a person will wear a set of aligners for two weeks. These custom made aligners will fit over teeth perfectly and apply the right amount of pressure to create tooth movement. Every two weeks or so, patients will wear a new, tighter set of aligners. As each set of aligners gets progressively tighter, these oral appliances can continue to move teeth while accommodating the previously changed position of teeth. Within a few months, patients will be able to see noticeable changes in their smiles.

Aligners are removable. On a day-to-day basis, aligners are worn most of the day but are taken out so that patients can eat and conduct oral hygiene without fixed orthodontia standing in the way. On average, Invisalign treatment times are shorter than average treatment times for conventional braces.

Treatment Benefits

Invisalign presents unique benefits to patients – especially when compared to conventional treatment methods. The most noticeable benefit with Invisalign is the fact that this treatment option is very inconspicuous. This makes Invisalign a great option for working professionals who do not want to wear obvious metal and wire braces. Many times, Invisalign’s aligners are undetectable to others because they are clear plastic.
On top of being a very discreet treatment option, Invisalign is typically viewed as more comfortable than other orthodontic treatment. Aligners are molded from semi-pliable plastics that do not have sharp edges that can irritate soft oral tissue. There are no wires that might come loose and poke into the linings of lips and cheeks either.

Another unique advantage to Invisalign is that aligners are removable. They are taken out for meals and oral hygiene so that patients can eat their favorite foods and clean their teeth and gums without obstruction. Those who have worn Invisalign can attest to the advantages of not having dietary restrictions during treatment or difficulty threading floss behind archwires to clean between teeth.

Overall, Invisalign offers a no-fuss solution to straightening one’s teeth. With comfortable and removable orthodontic appliances, people enjoy the fact that Invisalign treatment has a minimal impact on a person’s everyday life.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Why Orthodontics

Orthodontics encompasses far more than just improving the aesthetics of a smile. While moving teeth to straighter positions certainly improves one’s appearance and is an obvious advantage of wearing braces, receiving orthodontic treatment can significantly reduce your risk for developing conditions like gum disease and dental caries. Having your teeth properly spaced makes oral hygiene much easier and effective.
One of the objectives of orthodontic treatment is to improve a person’s occlusion (bite). The state of a person’s occlusion can have an impact on one’s oral health. When our teeth line up improperly during oral function, we have an increased risk for developing worn dentition because teeth make improper contact with each other. Improving the occlusion can protect teeth from developing untimely wear.

Correcting a malocclusion also helps with protecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its neighboring supportive tissues like ligaments and muscles from strain and overuse. Sometimes, orthodontic treatment can mitigate current issues with TMJ dysfunction and strain by correcting problems with one’s bite.

On top of benefitting from a beautiful, straight smile, orthodontics is an investment in your quality of life that can help build a foundation of optimal oral health.

Schedule an Invisalign Consultation

If Invisalign interests you as a treatment option, we invite you to schedule a consultation with our orthodontists, Dr. Lofgren and Dr. Ghosh. At your appointment, we will inquire about your health history, perform a physical examination, and take diagnostic images so that we can determine if Invisalign is the best treatment method for your needs. If Invisalign doesn’t meet your needs, we have other treatment options from which you can choose. Our mission is to develop a treatment plan that meets an individual’s unique situation.

It’s never too late to straighten your smile. If you have questions about Invisalign or would like to schedule a consultation with our skilled orthodontist, call our practice at your convenience.
